When I was in Texas, I used to receive SMS from different companies, promoting their products/services through Text Messaging. For example, once I bought a TV from Target- a very popular retail store. Just after a year, I started receiving SMS from Target, announcing the launching of TV with better functionality. They even took my old TV back, gave me some discount when I went and showed them the SMS. It was an excellent SMS Marketing tactics.
Now what is SMS Marketing, as per Wiki
SMS Marketing is multi-channel online marketing technique focused on reaching a specific audience on their cellphones/ tabs, or any other related devices through SMS or Text Message. Marketing through cellphones “SMS” (Short Message Service) became increasingly popular in the early 2000s in Europe and some parts of Asia when businesses started to collect mobile phone numbers and send off wanted (or unwanted) content. On average, SMS messages are read within four minutes, making them highly convertible.
Now let’s discuss how SMS Marketing has changed over time, and what are the simple ways to send effective SMS to the customers and yield excellent result.
In general, the purpose of SMS Marketing is to build a database of clients which will eventually be led to increase customer loyalty.
There are several reasons behind this excellent digital marketing tactic. For example:
Location Based SMS
When I visited Singapore a few months back, while roaming around a very popular mall, I kept on receiving excellent SMS related to special discounts available on the stores located in that Mall. Since my GPRS was on, those shops easily implemented close range marketing tactics, which is an ideal way of notifying people within your vicinity of any immediate offers. I just had to walk into one of the stores, showed them the SMS and received excellent discounts.
Campaign Based SMS
This is one of the most famous tactics. Every weekend I receive two SMS from two big grocery stores in Bangladesh. Through that SMS, they notify me of their special weekend campaigns etc.
This is very common and mostly used for Mobile Financial Services or Online Banking Services. Whenever customer performs a transaction, he/she gets SMS notification which includes the transaction ID of the successful transaction. An excellent way to notify the customers.
More than informing your customers of upcoming deals, SMS can also be a great way to send reminders for upcoming events and engage your customers by polling their opinions. For example, when a customer visits airtel customer care, they receive an SMS, on the quality of the service given. The poll asks for their opinion on the services they’ve been offered. A great way to measure customer service KPI’s.
Into SMS are the basic SMS sent by startups, announcing the launching of the service, or sent by the government to create awareness for any causes, or sent by existing companies, for giving an intro to their new products and services.
As per Forbes, a poll suggested that SMS Marketing is preferred to other digital marketing tactics for at least 60% of consumers.
